A hotel does not close in order to be renewed. We work in the lobby, the ballroom and the suite while the building is receiving its guests, to a programme measured in nights rather than weeks, and to a detail that is read from one metre and from twenty.

A shopping centre is public space: hundreds of thousands pass beneath the same ceiling in a single month. Alongside the main atrium sit the restaurants, cafés and family destinations, which run on a different logic: a shorter refit cycle, an opening tied to a season. The first has to take years of wear without ever looking tired; the second has to make a whole atmosphere in a small space and a short time.

In an airport thousands pass every hour, and the only thing any of them looks up at is the ceiling. The scale is enormous, and endurance is a condition rather than a luxury: surfaces cleaned every night, and installation carried out while the building runs and never stops.

Presidential Park
Almaty, Kazakhstan

An official building receives the state and its guests, and someone else fixes the date it opens. Here ornament is governed by protocol: a symmetry that tolerates no error, one module repeated the length of the hall, and a handover on a day that cannot move.

Mosques
Abu Bakr Babtain Mosque
Jeddah
3 photographs
In a mosque, ornament is not made to impress. The mihrab, the dome and the band of calligraphy are measured by what they do for the person standing in prayer, not for the one passing through with a camera. And because the work is an endowment that outlives those who commissioned it, it is built to last rather than to shine.

Moroccan Majlis — a private palace
Riyadh

A palace and a villa are in truth one client: a house made for one family and for whoever comes after them. No two rooms repeat, and the owner knows every detail because he sits beneath it every day: a balustrade a hand touches every evening, a majlis ceiling the family sees many times more often than any guest. These are our longest commissions, and our most private.
